Chanel switches the size paradigm with the new J12 XS ceramic watches. Until recently, “bigger and better” was the cliché catchphrase for the ‘Must-Tweet’ generation. The J12 XS is the latest incarnation of the iconic watch, which was first launched in 1999/2000 season by Chanel’s late artistic director Jacques Helleu.
By going smaller, Chanel has turned it into a bigger fashion statement. The J12 XS is only 19mm in diameter and plays puns with the words “Extra Small” and “Excess”. There’s even a finger watch in the new collection!
There are four versions:
Traditionalists can revel in the black or white variants with a slim, patent leather calfskin strap. This can be worn on its own or over a wider matching calfskin cuff with a silver lining, retailing at $4,975.
Fetishists will be in a frenzy about black, lambskin fingerless gloves by Maison Causse in a limited edition of 150 pieces at $7,550 a pair. The gloves are a nod to Chanel’s creative director Karl Lagerfeld and his love of this accessory.
Skinny sybarites can probably pull off the bondage design of six slim leather straps and the diamond-set watch dial and steel loops.
High jewellery designs such as a novelty ring, with the pieces priced between $10,000 and $105,000, will also be available. Yes…you read the prices correctly. Luxury, obviously ain’t cheap. 🙂
AlphaLuxe Favourite is the Chanel J12 XS Finger Watch featuring a inner bezel set with baguette diamonds on 18k white gold and black onyx dial in a black ceramic case. Uber-cool!
French embroidery Maison Lesage, which already collaborates with Chanel on other projects is the inspiration for the final option. Lesage cuffs hand-decorated with glass beads and sequins with the patterns of alligator, python and shagreen for the J12 XS are a mere $38,000 each.
Chanel first unveiled the pieces in New York and followed up in South Korea, Shanghai, Tokyo and Hong Kong. That tells you where Chanel is hot trending globally.
Rumour has it that the watches will be available in stores from the end of August 2016: not long now…..
