Cheat Meal of the Week: Edley’s BBQ in Nashville

Cravings are a funny thing.  I get them all the time and I have to be honest here, they can get right up there with the cravings of a pregnant woman.  One that comes to mind was from a few years ago when I was back living in New York… I’m fairly classic with my breakfast sandwiches, as are most New Yorkers.  One particular morning I couldn’t wait to get to the deli and have a sausage, egg, and cheese with salt, pepper, and ketchup.  I put in my order, pay, grab it, walk to the office, sit at my desk and the bastards forgot the “SPK”.  If I weren’t so fat and lazy at the time, I would’ve gone postal because I was thinking about it the entire train ride.

Other times cravings aren’t that simple.  Have you ever had a deep craving for something and not have a clue what it’s for?  That was me all week.  I was jonesing for something hard, but I just could quite put my finger on it until I drove by Edley’s BBQ on 12 South.  I found a spot, walked in and saw the line was long as hell but didn’t care.  I was getting what I wanted.  Nothing was gonna stop me from devouring a massive plate of their pulled pork nachos.

Everything is made from scratch on site.  It’s a beautiful thing.  The meats are all cooked “low and slow,” and they constantly remind the residents of Nashville with their tirelessly annoying radio commercials.  There are few things more satisfying than figuring out what you’re craving and massacring a plate of it.

The nachos: The chips are fried in bacon fat, covered in pulled pork, their sauces and their orgasmic cheese sauce.  I don’t know how they make it but they do it very well.  It’s under the appetizers section which is a joke considering how colossal the plate is.  I guess it’s meant to share but who likes to share nachos?  Certainly not this guy.  From my prior visits, there’s always a great ratio of meat:sauce:cheese, but this time it was slightly off.  I could’ve used a little more cheese sauce but hey, shit happens.


The sides: I noticed one of the specials and just had to give it a shot – brisket chili.  How could that not be great?  While the flavor and texture of the brisket were perfect, it was more soup-like than I wanted it.  I like my chili to be thick and meaty, but this was too watery for my taste.

I’ve always been a fan of their jalapeño corn bread and this was a little off too.  It was a tad dry which made the soupy chili convenient, I guess, for dipping.

All in all, the nachos delivered while the sides were left wanting.  It was still worth the wait but they may have just been having an off night.  These things happen but I’ll still be back.  If you find yourself in 12 South and want some really solid bbq, stop in.  The staff is always friendly and are good group of hard working folks.

Terrified that I could hit 300 lbs before I hit 30 years, I decided to take control of the foods I was eating and started taking the fitness thing more seriously. I keep a very strict diet, making sure I hit my macronutrients (proteins, fats and carbs) each day. I hit the gym six days a week.

But once a week I cheat and treat myself. Food is one of my favorite things in life. This regime allows me to have my cheese-stuffed, deep-fried cake and eat it too. My column will focus on these indulgent treats.
