Cheat Meal of the Week: The Flipside in Nashville

There are a number of men whose hands I’d love to shake for their life’s work – John Bonham, George Washington, George Washington Carver, Gandhi, Willis Carrier…  But there are 2 other men who also deserve the honor of shaking these drumstick/chicken wing holding clubs I call hands… F. Nephi Grigg and Golden Grigg – the inventors of the incomparable tater tot.  Those little cylindrical potato miracles have warmed hearts, souls, and taste buds for the last 63 years.  Only true American heroes would have the ability to create something so wonderful.

Here in town, there are a number of restaurants that serve up amazing renditions of the fried spud, but I was also in the mood for some chicken.  One of the first things I learned how to cook were chicken cutlets, of which I’ve found to be a rare thing below the Mason-Dixon line.  There’s a plethora of fried chicken here in Nashville but not chicken cutlets… at least how I know them.  That was until I found this little gem called The Flipside on 12 South.  Virtually, their entire menu is chicken cutlets, but topped in all different kinds of ways.  I’ve had to make a few Postmates pickups from there a few times.  I liked the vibe, the food looked and smelled good so I thought I’d give them a shot.

It definitely didn’t take me long see what I wanted.  I started off with a bowl of chili that I’d describe as very adequate.  It didn’t blow me away by any means but it was still good.  It came with a bag a Fritos as well which is always a crowd pleaser.  I’d give the chili a solid 7.5/10.

What I was really looking for came right as I emptied the chili bowl…

They call it the “Scooter.”  A chicken cutlet pounded thin, topped with tots, cheese dip, avocado, jalapeños, tomatoes, and drizzled in Buffalo wing sauce.

The Flipside’s “Scooter” – tator tops over a chicken cutlet

Needless to say it was right up my alley.  It had everything I could ask for on one gigantic plate.  I literally love every single one of those toppings.. especially the tots.  Then cover them in cheese dip, avocado and everything else?  You have heaven on a plate!

The only thing I’d change to really bring it home would be crispy chopped up bacon, but I’m a fat ass so bacon is pretty much my solution most of my problems.  It was great.  The chicken cutlet could have been a little warmer, but other than that it was fantastic.  The tots were hot and crispy, keeping the cheese dip from solidifying.  The tomatoes and jalapeños were cold and fresh while the avocado was soft and creamy.  Everything seemed fresh and flavorful.

The waitress came over with the check assuming I was done and seemed to be trying to get me outta there.  It wasn’t until the place became flooded with fancily dressed Frat bros and Sorority chicks that I realized she was actually trying to rescue me.  Little did she know that I noticed a family of four, outta the corner of my eye, sharing a milk shake.  I wanted one all to myself.

The Flipside milkshake
At The Flipside, they offer you boilerplate options with the option to add malt.  As you know if you have read any of my other Cheat Meal of the Week articles here on AlphaLuxe, I’m a simple guy who loves chocolate, so that’s what I got.  It was very passable.  The shake was pretty bland and lacked a richness in the chocolate.. not enough chocolate for me.  The ABC at Burger Republic still holds the coveted “Joey Exercises Because He Loves Food Too Much And Doesn’t Want To Be Obese: Milkshake Trophy” or “JEBHLFTMADWTBO” as the kidz say in the streets.  It’s a thing.. look it up.

All in all, I left there satisfied and fuller than a Planet Fitness after New Year’s.  A tremendous tip of the hat the Grigg brothers.  Your legacy will live on for generations.

Until next time friends…

MY BACKGROUND

I’m Joey, a New York drummer living in Nashville, playing with the band, Arc & Stones.

I LOVE FOOD! Right after college, I gained a lot of weight and hit a whopping 267 lbs. Terrified that I could hit 300 lbs before I hit 30 years, I decided to take control of the foods I was eating and started taking the fitness thing more seriously. I keep a very strict diet, making sure I hit my macronutrients (proteins, fats and carbs) each day. I hit the gym six days a week.

But once a week I cheat and treat myself. Food is one of my favorite things in life. This regime allows me to have my cheese-stuffed, deep-fried cake and eat it too. My column will focus on these indulgent treats.
