AlphaLuxe is Anti-Snobbery about Luxury
Past articles about Ralph Lauren timepieces have covered High Jewellery Deco models to bold adventurous Safari watches. We can’t escape the luxury aspect of AlphaLuxe so I am pleased to talk about a brace of watches you don’t need but may desire:
Ralph Lauren RL Automotive Tourbillon Timepieces
“I’ve always been inspired by automotive design—the materials, the lines, but also the power and functionality. Cars are like art—moving art — an accomplishment in mechanics and precision.” — Ralph Lauren
The latest Ralph Lauren offerings are the RL Automotive Tourbillon and RL Automotive Double Tourbillon watches — two new models in the Automotive Collection inspired by Ralph Lauren’s personal 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic Coupe. The man collects cars as well as watches.
A legendary automobile collides with one of horology’s most iconic mechanical complications, lending weight to the connection between two worlds of precision, high-performance, and style.
RL Automotive Tourbillon
Highlighted on the Ralph Lauren RL Automotive Tourbillon watch in a 45mm case is the tourbillon or “whirlwind” complication, where the escapement is housed in a rotating cage to counteract the effect of gravity for more precise timekeeping. The shot-blasted case is crafted from stainless steel with a black finish, as well as a smoky sapphire crystal caseback. The galvanic, matte black dial is detailed with beige Super-LumiNova® hour and minute hands, Arabic numerals, and an interlocking “RL” logo. The timepiece is shown on a black alligator strap.
Amboyna burl — a hardwood used in luxury automotive interiors — forms the luxury bezel, which was carefully cut and finished by hand to expose its rich, swirling grain patterns. The “bombé”-shaped bezel secured by hand-set screws, and the gracefully tapered lugs of the case, epitomise Ralph Lauren’s vision of a timepiece expressing the power and elegance of automotive design.
RL Automotive Double Tourbillon
The RL Automotive Double Tourbillon watch, also in a 45mm case size and featuring an even more stunning binary tourbillon, is another excess in the Automotive collection — a symbol of superior function and Ralph Lauren’s love of fine watchmaking.
“The Cost of True Luxury is the Choice it Affords.”
What then, the price of luxury?
Ralph Lauren RL Automotive Tourbillon (RLR0220713) is a mere $62,500
Ralph Lauren RL Automotive Double Tourbillon (RLR0220714) is a bit more at $99,000. OK: truth be told, After taxes, this watch is a $100K luxury 🙂
Declaration: I have not received any payment nor consideration to tender my opinion here.
