Looking for a beauty boost? The answer may be your teeth.
Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin wrote the song, “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile” for the Broadway musical, ‘Annie’.
Now, I don’t know that I’d go that far, but your smile is important, and with maturity comes stains and discoloration on the teeth that aren’t so pretty.
Until recently, the last time that I had my teeth whitened was before my wedding.
I don’t remember specifics, but I recall the process being several hours, so I never made time to go back and do it again.
I definitely fell into the category of “long overdue,” especially given my coffee habit. As genetics would have it, I also have great big “game show host” choppers making my smile very noticeable. It was time to treat my teeth to a ‘pick-me-up’.
The Consumer Guide to Dentistry, states that professional whitening is the most popular cosmetic dental service in the world, largely due to whitening taking place in a controlled and monitored office, that uses a high concentration of bleach on the teeth. I’ve never shied away from bleach on my hair, so why not go for it and try it out on my teeth; and that’s just what I did.
My concerns were pretty standard, I’m like a fine wine and getting better with age, but my teeth seem to be showing a bit more of the maturing process than I’d like.
I wanted a quick fix and did not want any service that was longer than one hour.
After all, how many hours am I to spend grooming?
The process used a cheek retractor to expose all of the teeth you see when I smile. A rubber shield (bleach bumper) was inserted on my gums to protect me from the bleaching gel. The gel was applied and left on for about 20 minutes, washed off, and applied again for 20 minutes; the bleach was activated with a blue UV light.
An hour later, my teeth were lighter by 3 shades. A few days later, they were lighter by 4 shades.
I’m pleased with my results (not illustrated), and I will say, the whiter teeth brighten my face and dare I say…give me a more youthful appearance?
Office visits can run between $500 to $1500.
Office Treatment Recommendation
For the in-office visit, I can personally recommend Dr. Jennifer Jablow (“The Smilemaker”), the creator of ‘IntelliWHITE’ oral care system and the dentist behind the smiles of FORD models, Victoria Secrets Angels, television hosts, CEOs, Fashionistas, Music Stars etc.
At Home Treatment Recommendation
If that’s not in your grooming budget or you don’t have the time, or a combination of both, at-home whitening systems are available, with lower bleach concentrations, but still with appreciable results.
The Supersmile® Ultimate Whitening System ($58) available at Bergdorf Goodman.
