Tickled my Fancy

Time a Hermès

Hermès tickled my fancy with its Slim d’Hermès L’heure impatiente, which is not the “impatient hour”, as some publications have implied, but the ‘Slim d’Hermes Eager Hour’. The watch invites you to look forward eagerly to a pre-set time within the next 12 hours. Suppose you have a rendezvous with an insatiable lover at 4 p.m. and have set the watch.

AN-ti-CI-pation

An hour before it occurs, the magical mechanism is set in motion and its progress can be followed by the indicator at 6 o’clock on the dial. Agonisingly, the hand creeps to the appointed time and for an hour of AN-ti-CI-pation, the torture continues until musical notes are struck at the climax of your ‘Eager Hour’.

The design codes of the Slim d’Hermès line include a dial with printed Arabic numerals designed specifically for Hermès by the noted French graphic designer Philippe Apeloig.

Jean-Marc Wiederrecht

You can blame that genius, award-winning watchmaker, Jean-Marc Wiederrecht of Agenhor, for collaborating with Hermes on the resonant, velvety-smooth sound that is discreetly attenuated for the wearer’s ears only.

Wiederrecht designed the thin 2.2mm module onto the case to provide a secure platform but still with plenty of empty space for a resonating chamber. The dial also has no contact with the case around its perimeter. All these elements were deliberately designed to enhance its acoustical properties within the parameters of the Slim d’Hermès range.

There is no need to understand how the magic happens but maybe the owner should learn a few keywords like “shark cam”, “Pegasus rack”, “constant torque helical spring” and “striking mechanism” so friends can nod wisely in suitable awe….?

The Slim d’Hermès L’Heure Impatiente is available in 18-karat rose gold and comes on a hand stitched blue alligator strap crafted in-house by Hermès, of course  — whom else?

Retail price: $39,900

A delightful play by Hermès on Time in our Mind….
