Is this the future of car “ownership”?
“I looked around but couldn’t find the car I dreamt of, so I built it myself.”
—Dr. Ferry Porsche
There’s now going to be an alternative to buying or leasing a car — subscribe to a membership service, which includes everything you need (car insurance, vehicle registration, maintenance, detailing, delivery, etc.) and switch between various models of the fleet, whenever your heart desires.
With the flick of your fingers through its mobile app, Porsche is launching Porsche Passport for pilot testing in the Atlanta Metro area.
For the cost of either $2,000 or $3,000 per month, depending on which tier membership you can afford, you can drive up to 22 different Porsches and experience the ins-and-outs of the Porsche fleet. Open up the mobile app and you can schedule same day, white-glove, delivery of another Porsche or schedule a future vehicle exchange.
There are 2 membership plans – Launch and Accelerate:
Launch: Includes on-demand access to eight model variants such as the 718 Boxster, Cayman S, Macan S and Cayenne, for a monthly fee of $2,000.
Accelerate: Includes on-demand access to 22 model variants such as the Porsche 911 Carrera S, Panamera 4S sports sedan, Macan GTS and Cayenne S E-Hybrid SUVs, in addition to the vehicles offered in the “Launch” package, for a monthly fee of $3,000.
There’s a One-Time initiation fee of $500.
Don’t have car insurance? Don’t fret because you also get a $1M liability insurance policy with $1,000 deductible. Other benefits of membership include complimentary vehicle delivery with a full tank of gas, roadside assistance, detailing, and maintenance.
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to select super and hyper cars such as the 918, 911 Turbo or 911 GT3; so I’m hoping Porsche debuts a 3rd pinnacle membership plan so I can at least experience the iconic 911 Turbo.
You know me. I have the need for speed, so a 911 Carrera S just won’t cut it. Hopefully this pilot program in Atlanta becomes a hit so Porsche can then expand Porsche Passport to other cities. And from there, many other brands should jump on this membership band wagon.
Could this be the future of car ownership?
Swap between different automobile membership plans whenever you want each month and enjoy the thrill of the drive. I don’t know about you but I enjoy driving, so being driven around by an autonomous car isn’t something I’m looking forward to.
Perhaps this car membership program will be the ideal alternative for people like me when Uber and autonomous driving take over the world?
