Aston Martin DB11 Volante and Coupe

After the Aston Martin DB11 Coupe was launched last year, aficionados have been eagerly awaiting the topless DB11 convertible. Announced two weeks ago, the new DB11 Volante sets new standards of performance, innovation, engineering and style as the definitive open-top Sports GT.

Hot Engine

A hot new 4.0-litre twin-turbo 510PS V8 engine powers the DB11 Volante that is built around an all-new bonded aluminium structure, first seen in the DB11 Coupe.

Lighter and more rigid than the old DB9 it replaces, the DB11 Volante pimps levels of performance and handling that accentuate its sporting side, while increased refinement, comfort and interior space maintains its position as a consummate grand tourer.

Smart Drive

The Volante’s 3-stage powertrain and chassis modes work in perfect harmony with the 8-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission, electric power steering and limited-slip differential with dynamic torque vectoring, so the driver is can choose the car’s behaviour setting to suit the road and weather conditions or their mood. You even get a creature comforts such as a heated steering wheel for all-season open-air motoring.

Unusually, there are rear seat ISOFIX attachment points – a first for a Volante model – so you can attach a baby seat in a GT, however unlikely that is! 🙂

Cool Looks

The DB11 Volante has the same single-piece aluminium bonnet and ‘Curlicue’ aerodynamic feature from the DB11 Coupe, combined with new wood or carbon fibre veneer panels on the seat backs, an immaculately tailored fabric hood – choice of bordeaux red, black silver or grey silver – dramatic ‘light blade’ tail lights with bold C-graphic and a new forged alloy wheel design.

The distinguishing feature is the convertible roof. Traditionalists like the appeal of a fabric hood but it has to perform as well as a solid “folder” by using the latest acoustic and insulation materials. This new 8-layer roof protects occupants from the extremes of weather and wind noise.

Folding to a class-leading stack height, the Volante’s hood takes just 14 seconds to lower and 16 seconds to close, operated remotely from the key, or on the move at speeds of up to 31 mph with a 31 mph headwind. The new hood system has scrounged an extra 20 per cent in boot volume compared to the outgoing DB9 Volante.

Aston Martin CEO, Dr Andy Palmer, said of the DB11 Volante: “For many of our customers, indeed many generations of Aston Martin customer, the Volante has always offered something very special: a unique combination of elegant style, innate sporting ability and sensory engagement that lifts it above other open-top cars. The new DB11 Volante captures those qualities perfectly and promises the kind of pleasure and enjoyment that can only come from driving an open-top Aston Martin.”

AlphaLuxe Comment

It is very challenging to create a convertible car while retaining structural and dynamic integrity. You achieve the former by engineering for strength and rigidity, but to maintain the latter, you need to keep weight to a minimum. Aston Martin maximised the advantages of the DB11 Coupe’s bonded structure to achieve a DB11 Volante body that is 26kg lighter and 5 per cent stiffer than the DB9 Volante.

The result is a superlative GT. One that has greater performance and agility with increased comfort, refinement and interior space for users and their luggage.
