MAKING THE IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBLE, HUBLOT CREATES THE FIRST VIBRANTLY COLOURED CERAMIC
Hublot fires the imagination with the Hublot Big Bang Unico Red Magic — the first true red ceramic cased watch.
Be First. Be Unique. Be Different.
History of Ceramic Watches
While we have had ceramic-metallic (cermet) cased watches since 1962, true ceramic cases were not introduced until a few proof-of-concept examples by IWC in 1986 and full production ceramic watches in 1994. The colour choices have been restricted to black, grey or white for full cases and coloured ceramic for small components like bezels. Bright colour ceramic is difficult to produce because the sintering bake process makes the colour fade.
In 2013, Hublot showed the world that creating a red ceramic could be done but as a piece unique ONLY WATCH for charity auction.
In 2017, the Hublot Big Bang Ferrari Unico Carbon Red Ceramic watch appeared with a carbon fibre case and red ceramic bezel.
2018: Hublot Big Bang Unico Red Magic
This week, Hublot introduced the Hublot Big Bang Unico Red Magic and we all took notice!
When we visited Hublot Manufacture some years back, we were told about the new ceramic, in confidence. It took four more years of development by Hublot Research & Development department and Metallurgy & Materials laboratory after inventing the magic formula that allows the creation of vibrantly coloured ceramics for commercial use.
This has previously not been done in industries using technical and aesthetic ceramics. In addition, Hublot refined all the procedures necessary to produce every component of the watch case from this special material.
This newly developed ceramic is incredibly dense, with hardness of 1500 HVI compared to 1200 HV2 of conventional ceramics. The patented process gives a rich colour and more resilient ceramic.
The goal was to produce commercial quantities of Ferrari Red ‘vibrantly coloured ceramic’ cases that did not discolour during the sintering process. The major innovation is a fusion of pressure and heat that sinters the ceramic without burning the pigments.
Having mastered the basic hues with this method Hublot is now ready to introduce a whole new world of coloured ceramics to its watch collections.
There are only 500 numbered pieces in this Red Magic edition and it should be a sell out even if some owners don’t have a Ferrari. For this first coloured ceramic, Hublot chose vivid red, which symbolises power, passion and glory.
The Big Bang Unico Red Magic is undoubtedly an ultra-resilient ceramic watch, full of fire.
The 45 mm case and bezel are made from Hublot’s patented red ceramic, boasting a polished finish. The flange, indexes, minute and seconds counters, Arabic numerals and hands all match this hue, adorned in the same red to highlight the contrast with the mechanism of the Unico HUB124 manufacture movement and its column wheel, visible on the dial side through the sapphire crystal.
This theme continues through the entire watch, matched with a lined structured red rubber strap.
“There is a quote which perfectly illustrates our ongoing desire to push watchmaking, materials, and fusion to the limit. A conviction that nothing is impossible. In the words of Charlie Chaplin: “Let us strive for the impossible. The great achievements throughout history have been the conquest of what seemed the impossible”. Today, with the world’s first vibrantly coloured ceramic, Hublot has once again demonstrated that the impossible really is possible!” — Ricardo Guadalupe, CEO of Hublot
