Surprise Colour Splash Sounds at Milan Design Week 2018

HAY for Sonos Limited Edition Speakers

Sonos is an American consumer electronics company widely known for smart speakers – utilitarian but not likely to excite in usual black or white – until now.

At Palazzo Clerici during Milan Design Week (17 – 22 April 2018), the reworked HAY for Sonos Limited Edition Collection took centre stage and sizzled with colourful hues.

They had been revamped by the hottest Danish design studio of the moment – HAY – founded by husband and wife, Rolf and Mette Hay.

Hay largely created the trend for furniture brands to produce accessories when it began selling smaller-sized pieces in 2008. Hay collaborated with IKEA on a collection in 2017 and also worked with chef Frederik Bille Brahe to release a collection of kitchenware, pots, pans, sponges and cups.

The collaboration on the small Sonos One speaker re-designed with a colour palette developed by Hay in red, green and yellow.

“Colour is one of the most important tools in the design process, and it was very important we didn’t just create a colour scale that looked beautiful,” said Mette Hay. “Colours can hide completely and disappear or provide contrast – creating ranges in more colours produces more impact and opportunities for mixing items in the home. These speakers deserve to be treated like furniture; strong, independent objects that can blend in or stand out – functional accessories for any room that fit different needs and different spaces.”

The limited-edition collection is designed to coordinate with different home environments as the range of colours were chosen to suit a range of interiors.

“With Hay, a company whose work we greatly respect and whose design philosophy is aligned with our own, we found a partner with whom to explore the evolving role of sound as an architectural element in the home,” said Sonos’ vice president of design, Tad Toulis.

The Soros One speaker is fundamentally a simple and minimalisitc form with buttons that are flushed on the surface. A single white light indicates when it is powered up and it will work with Apple’s AirPlay2 system, that allows wireless connection to televisions, smartphones and other audio devices in the home.

On Sale in September

The Hay for Sonos Limited Edition Collection goes on sale in September 2018, starting from $229 (£160), at Sonos website and in Sonos flagship stores in New York, London and Berlin, as well as at Hay House in Copenhagen.

The colourful speakers are no different from the regular Sonos One monochromatic speakers apart from the premium price ($229 vs $199). The magic of the collaboration with Hay is the transposition of the product from mere electronic equipment into architectural yet functional elements in home décor.
