Crazy Summer Time
It’s that time of the year again – that crazy time just before Summer when Romain Jerome or RJ Watches introduce their playful watches.
Read previous reports of PAC-MAN™, Tetris™, Pikachu™ and Hello Kitty™ watch launches.
The third PAC-MAN™ watch called Level III incorporates a new style as a tribute to the classic computer game and in keeping with the brand’s playful spirit.
The new black dial with a mirror-polished finish is different from previous models. The polished titanium bezel surrounds a maze where PAC-MAN™ trundles around on a race to chomp ghosts and hunt for cherries or Pac-Dots.
“The true cost of luxury is the choice that it affords.”
Indeed, the handcraft involved with this ostensibly “fun watch” is the true cost of luxury. The game scene requires 27 separate components hand assembled onto three levels on the dial. The blue aluminium maze walls are sanded on the edges and polished on top. The raised walls were filled with black lacquer to heighten the 3D effect.
The game’s characters (PAC-MAN™, ghosts and cherries) are reproduced by carefully placing pixellated appliques on the dial. Each applique was meticulously filled by hand with several different colours of lacquer. The brand monogram framed at position 12:00 has a satin finish.
The contrasting finishes on dial produce a pleasing depth.
The 46 mm titanium case is coated with black PVD and contains an automatic winding movement. The blue rubber strap matches the blue accents on the dial and are attached to to articulated lugs. That articulation allows extra degrees of movement for a comfortable fit on the wrist.
The case back is dominated by a medallion of our legendary pixellated yellow video game character amidst the stellar pattern that continues onto the watch back and strap.
The PAC-MAN™ Level III watch is produced as a limited series of 80 pieces symbolising the year that Bandai released the famous Japanese arcade game.
It is available June 2018.
Prices will be CHF 14,900 or USD 17,900.
Since being founded in 2004, RJ (Romain Jerome) has not shied away from provocative products and marketing, whether inspired by the depths of the oceans or the heavens above in outer space.
Who can forget or forgive their use of raw unprocessed elements from historical landmarks in their watches? RJ “Moon Dust” watches had real moon dust embedded into their dials, while RJ “Titanic” watches were forged from the actual steel that was used to construct the doomed ocean liner.
Now, they are positioned as the cutting-edge of Swiss Made creative culture inspired by pop culture, game play, exploration, technology and fashion.
