Island in the Sun
Saint-Barthélemy – usually abbreviated to St. Barts, St. Barths or Saint Barth – is a tiny, volcanic island in the Caribbean Sea as part of four territories of the Leeward Islands (French West Indies, Guadeloupe, and Martinique). It is the only Caribbean island which was a Swedish colony for a while as evidenced by the Swedish triple crowns on the island’s coat-of-arms.
Saint Barthélemy was a French commune as part of Guadeloupe, administrated as an overseas department of France. In 2003, St. Barts voted to secede from Guadeloupe to form a separate overseas collectivity (COM) of France.
Except for the hiatus caused by Hurricane Irma damage over a year ago, St. Barthélemy is THE winter destination for celebrities and the uber rich. The season starts in November with packed bars and restaurants.
Champagne and caviar are consumed in such abundance that would even make a Chinese gazillionnaire blush…
Superstar DJs man the sound decks in the nightclubs and practically anyone who is anyone takes to the dance floors.
New Year’s Eve is l-e-g-e-n-d-a-r-y as the superyachts sweep in majestically. At night, the Gustavia Harbour sparkles as the boats’ light up like fireflies. You could spend many an hour checking off famous craft like The Rising Sun, The A, The Serene, Le Grand Bleu, Sycara Yacht The Limitless, or The Luna.
The ‘big banana’ boat is, of course, L’Eclipse – owned by billionaire oligarch Roman Abramovich, whose invites superstar bands to play at his villa: The Black Eyed Peas (celebrating their 20th year in the biz), Red Hot Chili Peppers, King Of Leons, The Black Keys (who?) and the late, Prince.
The less-well-off arrive by air at one of the most dangerous airports in the world, as fleets of private jets circle in before New Year’s Eve. The show-offs even land their helicopters on the yachts for extra fizz.
Many of the world’s rich and famous love to spend New Year’s eve (NYE) in St. Barth because…well…all their friends are there.
Some turn up just once for the paparazzi and others come every year: The Kardashians, Leonardo Di Caprio, Mariah Carey, Denzel Washington, Kendall Jenner, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Harry Styles, Ellen DeGeneres, Beyoncé & Jay Z, Puff Daddy, Jessica Alba, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Paul Allen, Steven Spielberg, the Rothschilds, Jack Nicholson, Michael Douglas, Bono, Bon Jovi, Linda Evangelista, Usher, Hugh Jackman, and the late Johnny Hallyday (well, obviously not visiting any more).
The game is to look around and try to identify them.
Even better, be spotted yourself!
NYE Timetable at Nikki Beach St. Barth
During the day, many will be shopping in the boutiques, chilling their best champagnes, or posing for the paparazzi on the beaches; while others sail in the New Year’s Eve Regatta: some of the slinkiest sailboats parade for a race around the island during the afternoon. Lunch and Dinner are fully subscribed affairs at the swankiest establishments if you don’t have a superyacht or villa.
At midnight, a massive roar fills the harbour as every boat or yacht sound their horns and set off flares and fireworks in unison with the official display managed by the Collectivité from Fort Oscar overlooking the city and Gustavia Harbour – literally, with money to burn!
This year, for NYE, Nikki Beach St. Barth proposes celebrating New Year’s Eve under the stars in its “Surrealism Ball” with packages for 4 people: a special dinner and its selection of champagne. The after-party will start with magical support acts, followed by the private, intimate and exclusive performance by Mariah Carey.
Open in 2002 by the Nikki Beach franchise, which also has sister resorts in the trendiest locations such as Monaco, Costa Rica, Bali, Ibiza, or Koh Samui, Nikki Beach St. Barth sets the ultimate standard for hedonists seeking a sophisticated yet laid back experience. With signature vibe, iconic white drapes, tepee and sunbeds, Nikki Beach St. Barth is the celebrities’ ‘playground of choice’, where each year members of the high society enjoy its ‘piece unique’ concept, now famous throughout the world.
Dazzling white in theme but packed with music and fun, Nikki Beach already has the reputation that draws returning visitors over and over again: themed days on the beach with hot DJs, a ‘delish’ cuisine and an electrifying atmosphere. Nestled on the smaller end of St Jean Beach, the Nikki Beach is the ultimate MS-BS (must see – be seen) establishment to visit.
For lunch, ‘le Nikki’ as the locals call it proposes only the best: Petrossian caviar, chicken satay ‘Nikki style’, grilled lobster and local fish, and the most amazing selection of wines, champagnes and cocktail, served right at your table while viewing their fascinating fashion shows and enjoy the unique vibe.
You don’t even have to go home after an afternoon of fun on the beach as it can blend into a sophisticated dinner lulled by the soothing rhythm of the sea. In reality, there will be a “costume change” late afternoon so the bling comes out to challenge the sky at night!
Evening with Mariah Carey
“We all know how much I love to celebrate the holidays. This year will be no exception. The guests of Nikki Beach Saint Barth are in for a treat.” – Mariah Carey.
Before a performance from one of the all-time greats, guests will have been treated to a decadent five-course meal. The menu by Chef Antoine Durand includes courses like Snow Crab with fresh herbs and Baika™ Royal caviar wrapped in gold leaf, Kobe Beef filet with mushrooms, potato puree, mini vegetables with sage and Perigourdine sauce.
Also known as Siberian Caviar, Baika™ has larger eggs and a more delicate texture than most caviar, but is bursting with the strong, oceanic flavor aficionados love. Some call it a “caviar lover’s caviar”.
The festivities begin at 23:00 before a party atmosphere builds from 23:30, when General Admissions are admitted. Then, Mariah Carey will hit the stage to showcase both new hits and favoured classics before the famous annual fireworks display signals the onset of 2019.
“Carriages” are expected at 04:00 but those not completely ‘partied out’ by then and/or still upright, will be invited to join an extravagant New Year’s Day celebration the following day.
