“Thirty years after my first participation with Jacky Ickx, I am much looking forward to driving with Caroline-Marie this time around, in the same Gullwing Mercedes.” – Karl-Friedrich Scheufele.
That was the message on my mobile phone that brought a smile to my face. My friend’s excitement is still palpable as another generation of the Scheufele family takes to the highways and byways of Italy between 15th – 18th May 2019. Like his father, Karl Scheufele III, he is passing on his passion for “the most beautiful race in the world” to his daughter. Enzo Ferrari called it “la corsa più bella del mondo”.
The Mercedes Benz 300 SL Coupe W198 belonged to family patriarch and may have been the car that conveyed the senior Scheufele from Pforzheim to Geneva in 1963 to purchase the Chopard company.
Last year, Chopard celebrated three decades of partnership with the Mille Miglia race over a 1,000 mile loop from Brescia to Rome and back. Unique in the world of classic motorsport, the partnership reflects Chopard Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele’s passion for classic cars.
Mille Miglia is a race restricted to classic models built between 1927 and 1957 that participated in the original race series. Thousands of car lovers from all over the world converge on the car control procedures in the historic streets and squares of Brescia. Fans get to meet the racers (Formula 1 champions, celebrities, actors, and athletes) to discuss the route, placement expectations, and the race cars.
Alfa Romeo, Zagato, Lancia, Ferrari, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Fiat, Audi, BMW, Bugatti, Maserati, Aston Martin: more than 400 fascinating cars all meet in Brescia; they come from the garage of car collectors or car manufacturers’ museums.
At the end of the competition, on Saturday May 18 there will be a Great White Night in the streets of Brescia’s old centre. For further information, visit the website www.millemiglia.it
Chopard Mille Miglia 2019 Race Editions
By tradition, Chopard issues the Mille Miglia 2019 Race Edition watch. Originally, supplied only to the racers, they are now available to the public as limited editions. For 2019, they are a 1000-piece limited edition in stainless steel and a 250-piece two-tone limited edition in stainless steel and 18-carat rose gold. These distinctive, sporty and accurate chronographs are imbued with the tradition and spirit of watches for speedsters with style.
The 44mm diameter Chopard Mille Miglia 2019 Race Editions belong to the Mille Miglia GTS collection originally presented in 2015. By virtue of a screw-in back, the water resistance is guaranteed to 100 metres. The case-back is engraved with the Mille Miglia logo on a black PVD-treated checkerboard pattern like the race commissioner’s flag. Powered by an automotic-winding chronograph movement whose accuracy is certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC), you can look forward to a full two-day power reserve.
The hands and hour-markers are coated with Super-LumiNova® for glowing readability, day and night. More space was made on the dial by integrating the seconds numerals into the inner bezel ring. The anthracite chronograph counters on the vertical axis with the minutes at 12 o’clock, and the hours at 6 o’clock, contrast with the silver-toned dial and small seconds counter at 9 o’clock. The chronograph hands are red-tipped against the black of the counters, inner bezel ring and bezel to highlight the chronograph-related functions.
The big news this year is the date display positioned for the first time under a domed crystal for magnified legibility.
As a nod to the classic car community, the strap lining features a Dunlop 1960s tyre-tread motif ensuring maximum wearer comfort but with a leather outer finish for top style: the best of both worlds.

Mille Miglia GTS Power Control Editions
For 2019, Chopard also unveils two new limited editions of the Mille Miglia GTS Power Control with its distinctive “fuel gauge” indicating the power reserve.
Featuring a choice of all-steel or steel and 18-carat ethical rose gold cases, both models have a Chronometer-certified, automatic-wiinding movement with 60 hours of power reserve and dials and straps inspired by historic competition cars.
Inside the Mille Miglia GTS Power Reserve is a reliable in-house ‘engine’ in the form of Chopard’s 01.08-C movement that can be inspected through the portal case back peeking past the inscription ‘Brescia-Rome-Brescia’ as a reminder of the 1,000 mile route.

Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph Zagato 100th Anniversary Edition
Although this watch is not premiered at the Mille Miglia Race, having been spotted by AlphaLuxe at the Third Concorso d’Eleganza Kyoto, it still has connection with the race. Belonging to the Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph family, the watch also celebrates the 100th anniversary of Zagato, whose cars have won the Mille Miglia a record eight times in 24 participations since 1927. As scions of their respective families, Mille Miglia is where Mr. Karl-Friedrich Scheufele and Dr. Andrea Zagato met 30 years ago.
Sharing a love of fine mechanics, a passion for design, respect for tradition, and an attraction to racing and performance have all contributed to their past and future collaborations. Chopard became an official sponsor of the Scuderia Sports Zagato racing team while Zagato inspired Chopard to produce limited editions of its Mille Miglia watches.
This 100th birthday tribute by Chopard in a 100-piece limited edition combines a dial with Zagato’s signature Z-pattern and red-lacquered colour, a curved 42mm steel case and a leather bund strap with tone-on-tone stiching inspired by Zagato’s upholstery. Drivers used the bund strap securely wrapped around the sleeve of their rally jacket and in the evening, it is quickly removed, leaving the elegant black calfskin strap for the perfect gentleman’s outfit.
The ‘engine’ inside is an automatic winding mechanical movement certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).
Ref. 168589-3020 – in stainless steel with black calfskin bund strap – 100-piece limited edition – Exclusively available from Chopard boutiques and corners. $6,890 USD
Having reviewed and owned a nunber of Chopard Mille Miglia Race Edition watches in different case styles, with and without chronograph function or with and without in-house Chopard movements, I can attest to their overall sportive praiseworthiness.
The watches without in-house movements are a tad more affordable if that is not a deal-breaking criterium.
